Audience Expectation.

What does an audience (or those that book you) expect?

I've broken out with a cold sweat and fear to my stomach as I have just accepted a gig (for my new band) that I have no idea how to prepare for.

I wont go into specifics at this point, but I'd like to hear anecdotes (good and bad) from those that have said yes to something but with a niggling thought that the organisers have booked the wrong band.

eg death metal at a wedding...sounds bad, but what if it was marylin mansons wedding or whatever.

The audience expects familiarity.

Beyond that you gotta tell more. What an audience expects at a pub is different from an outdoor concert is different from a jazz show is different from a coffee-house . . .

As for your point inquiry: I played in a pretty far-out free-jazz band back in the late 80s with Paul Flaherty. We were booked into a mainstream jazz club. As we walked in the staff realized exactly whom they had hired for the evening. We were fired before we even unpacked!
