I'm going into the studio after a long lay-off, with Ron Miles the cornetist on this Bill Frisell clip and my old colleague, the fine Jim Hall inspired Denver guitarist Dale Bruning in a couple weeks for the Capri label.
Should be a kickina'.
Maybe Dale and I can ride Ron's coat-tails to outrageous fame and millions of American dollars and cents. (maybe a chick or two fer the old guy, as well.)
I'll drop some clips if I get the nerve. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmcmb...eature=related

Ron is one of my musical sons from my Denver crew. I kind of mentored him a bit. I had a trio here with Dale (who Bill Frisell studied with) and a great tenor player named Ron Washington who had a sound similar to Harold Land, my favorite tenorist. Ron W. became very ill and we had to try and replace him. I had my ear on Ron Miles for a spell and figured what the hell, bring him in and give him some time to do some standards. With Dale's brilliant harmonization's and the fact that I know a hell of alot of tunes, it gave Ron some stretch time in that groove.
Ron (on my quartet side "Speak Low"), along with the great pianist Eric Gunnison (also on my quartet side and ex-Carmen McRae), the wonderful B3 player Pat Bianchi, and my girl, ex-Ray Brown flute player Holly Hoffman are like my own kids. All are very successful and at the top of their game now. I be proud.
Tom Burns, owner of Capri has done stuff with Ron, Holly, Ray Brown and Super Bass, Red Mitchell, John Clayton and many others. Dale and I did a vinyl duo side called "Our Delight" for him. Our Sam Sherry seems to like that one for some odd reason.
It is nice that Ron didn't forget two old farts who gave him a shot.
Now if we can take a shot without stepping on our ****'s all will be well with the world.

These are essential listening for bassists and for fans of straight-ahead jazz. In the genre, this is one of The Ways That It Is Done.
Dale is such a gentleman and the duo record is classy and classic. But that quartet record . . . all live, all in the moment, all just so. Truly just so. Quote: |

Reminds me of tenor player Spike Robinson who used to introduce me thusly:
"I've played with alot of bass players in my life............and this guy is one of 'em".
I'll say hi to Dale.

After a difficult week helping Mrs. Wineaux deal with her crash-related bruises and dealing with insurance adjusters, this was some much-needed great news!
Can't wait to hear the result.

I was so bummed to hear about the accident.
That one thread she came in on was so cool. I think it must have been a first, for someones significant other to come in to put her foot down on the possibility of one of us buying another bass. Great sense of humor. Must be a very special lady.
Give her my very best, please.

That man can play | Yeah David, but you gotta keep an ear on him when he plays the standards. He loves to displace phrases over the bar lines.
When we first brought him in the trio gig he had me and Dale thinking he was lost. Turned out he was just yanking our chains.
