Maybe it's a trend and they're gonna put pictures of the cousins of featured bassists on the cover? Then the Doug Watkins issue could have a pitcher of PC!

Oops.
Gotta' subscribe for the possible BP response (this oughta' be good ).

PS. I must admit I'm not familiar enough with the images to have caught this myself, but then again, I'm not the editor of a major music publication.

If I were the editor, I'd start cleaning my desk.

As a subscriber to BP from the very beginning, I too am beginning to wonder how much longer the magazine will continue in print form. BP is a niche magazine, strictly speaking, as an offshoot of Guitar Player. Even though there are a lot of bass players out here in the world, that is not going to translate into sufficient sales long-term. Print, postage, and every expense relating to the print edition are going up. With access to Internet information and websites, you can look up just about everything relating to gear, bands, bassists, and technique.

I would hate to see BP go away, but honestly, I don't really read it anymore. I'll probably let my subscription lapse this year.

Having said all that, I love the old editions, and will pull them out every now and then just to look back on what and who was big back then. Also, old BPs and GPs serve me as a sort of mental quipu.. they remind me of what was going on in my life at that point. Mailing labels remind me of places I lived at the time I got those issues. So the nostalgia factor plays in, too.

I don't think BP "sucks", but it's not essential today as it was in the 1990's.

Coincidence or not, he already did. The following issue states that Bill Leigh's "position [ as Editor-in-Chief ] was eliminated in the wake of a company-wide restructuring due to the shrinking U.S. economy." Too bad. I liked him.

One of the main reasons I liked what he did is that I've observed that the magazine has been providing more air time to upright players in the last 12-18 months. Prior to that, there were many issues where DB was completely absent, except maybe for some vendor ads. And the article on PC was well done I thought. John Goldsby's articles are always top notch IMO. There is another one of John's "woodshed" pieces in the current issue, along with a short article on John Clayton, and one on Todd Coolman.

Thanks, Steve for the nice words.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Please stay tuned for an explanation regarding the March cover of Bass Player. You might find it hard to fathom how many people and organizations are involved in the simple act of putting one photo of someone on the cover of a magazine. Once the dust settles about the whole issue, you—my fellow TBers—will be among the first ones to get the real story.

In the meantime, please remember that this author did not see the photo before it was printed.

Regarding the change of editors: I've been writing for Bass Player off and on for almost twenty years, and I've seen a lot of great editors come and go: Jim Roberts, Richard Johnston, Karl Coryat and now Bill Leigh. The publishing business is just as tricky and fickle as the music business itself. Tricky and fickle produce the double-whammy of instability and trendiness.

I would not read too much into the personnel change. Jonathan Herrera, the new editor, has been a fixture at the magazine for years. He's a fine bass player and an excellent writer and editor (those are two different skills, btw), and I am confident he can make the magazine appealing on a certain level to many players.

Hang tight for an update, although it may take awhile for a cohesive tap-dance, I mean explanation to surface.

My copy of that issue has some ridiculous ad-fake-cover glued to the real cover and I never even noticed the pic, crazy!

I'd forgotten about that. It was an ad for the TC bass amp if I remember correctly. Really threw me when I first pulled it out of the mail box.
