Bass recorders

Anyone here play or have experience with bass recorders?

I've been drawn to getting one to augment my sonic palette for my band, especially as you can get a cheapo one from Thomann for less than Ģ100 ($200):

I know cheap instruments...................

However I've never played any type of woodwind instrument and don't know if I'd be biting off more than I could chew (no pun intended).

I'm not looking to become a virtuoso, but just to be able to drop a few nice motifs or refrains into our improvisations would be invaluable.
I'm also looking at the idea of using one as a composing tool away from the bass.

Thanks for any tips & info etc etc
