Bass Rental In LA?

Hello,

My son will be auditioning at USC's Thornton School Of Music (jazz studies) on double bass on January 27th. We will be flying from Nashville, TN and will need to rent a bass in the LA area. Any suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Bobby

Suggestion

You might try Lemur Music in Orange County. lemur@lemurmusic.com Big bass store. They might also give you some leads.

Hey, thanks!

I didn't realize that Lemur is in the LA area. I also was referred to World of Strings in Long Beach. Has anyone had any experience with them?

Bobby,

I have never purchased anything from World of Strings, but they have a great reputation too. The bass person there is very helpful. I don't know if they rent instruments, but its worth contacting both of these places and see what they could offer. Does not USC have some in-school basses available?

You know, I haven't fully explored what they have available but I know that my son would like to have the bass that he'll be auditioning on for a day or so to practice and get used to it. I'm not sure that USC would let us take a bass off campus, etc., so it may be best just to rent one. I've got a few options at this point. Someone also just mentioned LA Bassworks, have you heard of them?

Thanks!

la bass works - NOT world of strings

bass works is owned and operated by Lisa Gass. she is the best in los angeles no questions asked. her number is: (213) 380-3480
world of strings is terrible and over priced. Their Luthier over there is total sham and not a very nice guy either. I have rented from Lisa on numerous occasions and always get great basses to use at good rates and she will often change the set up for you a little if you need it before you leave. I highly recomend her and whatever you do stay away from world of strings. also - Lemur is not in LA it's in san clemente which is a few hours south
good luck!

Another option that should be explored is renting a flight trunk, so your son can play his best on a familiar instrument. It would be a waste to fly all the way out there and spend all that money if he can't represent himself the best way possible. Flying with a bass can be a pain, but so is playing an important audition on an umfamiliar bass.

Lisa Gass (LA Bass works) is your best option if you refuse to fly with the bass Lemur is pretty far away and world of strings is not really a good idea.

FIGHT ON!

I don't even play DB, but I am a proud Trojan. May your son have the best of luck in his bid to join the USC family.
