Are basses women?

Hi,

I have noticed on this forum that when a lot of upright players talk about there instruments, they refer to there basses as a "she". Why is that? It's just wood right? Just becuase a bass has f-holes, that doesn't give it a gender, does it? Is it just guys that do this? If a bass belongs to a female, does that make said bass a male. Anyways, I am just curious about the "basses having a gender phenomenom" and I am not trying to be disrespectful to anyone. Please excuse my ramblings. I have too much free time today.

Anything that I fondle that lovingly is definitely female.

Most women have only one f-hole.

I never got the 'naming inanimate objects' thing. I have never named a car, a bike (I was a pretty hard core distance cyclist), a golf club, or my bass.

Mine is named "Vicky." She's tall, shapely, delicate and a presence in the home. My wife accepts her because she knows who was around first!

I definitely won't cross her. Most girls can kick my ass.

Celeste and I have been around the world together. Been through countless girlfriends, and a failed marriage. She's not going anywhere though.

Actually, they can be either sex. I have an old laminate whose name is Fat Albert, named after the Bill Cosby character. My carved bass is too pretty to be a boy, so her name is Fat Alice. I think that those two have been mating in my closet, cause I found a violin in there this morning.

At the risk of embarrassing myself I will be somewhat less than explicit but...

I've always felt that there are physical aspects of playing bass, various motion, friction, etc., that have parallels in making love to a woman. I've been able to better visualize and internalize aspects of bow pressure, vibrato, and other things by relating them to certain sexual activities.

But...you'll just have to imagine what I'm getting at. I can say no more....

Oh yeah...and of course slapping on gut strings is also a lot like making love to woman ..

College?! Get rid of that girlfriend and your eyes won't remain virgin much longer.

I've never named a bass, nor even referred to mine with a gender (though I have called it my homie at times). If I received a bass with a name and gender, I would respectfully continue to call it by that name though.
