Bassist or Bassman

What do you call one who plays bass? Is there a difference? Regional? DB vs. EB?

I use the monikers 'me' or, in the case that I actually refer to another of bass-persuasion, 'what's his name'.

Laura?

I guess I should call my bass playing friend Laura a "lady bassman".

For some reason, this thread keeps reminding me of the "Seinfeld" episode where Kramer gets the license plates that read "ASSMAN".

I'm a man, with or without the bass. I cringe when somebody says "the bass man"...."bass player" works just fine for me.

Yeah, that makes me cringe too. Usually a chick singer, sorry to say. Even worse is when they say my bass player.

All of my legal documents have always listed my occupation as "bassist". I do try to act like a man, but hey, I'm a jazz musician, so I'll never really grow up.

How about "bassboy"?
