Definitely a new experience for me. I held my own in some aspects - was usually not the first guy to get lost. (Bunch of old farts having fun - not much pressure.) And I nailed a few big syncopated passages pretty good.
My previous drumming experiences have felt remarkably similar to what I do on bass and this time was no exception (keep the tempo steady, state the form, help round up strays). Except on drums, in this setting, my skill level is really not quite passable. (Doesn't help that I'd never laid eyes on a drum chart before.)
But that's what made this such a great experience for me. It's highlighted a bunch of things I really need to start working on TODAY if I ever mean to leave the house with a drum set again.
I'll be back next week, alas on bass.
But I'm really hoping this opportunity comes up again, and that I can get the hours in and be worthy of it. Funny how this felt like such a carnival ride to me because on bass, I'm just about at the end of my rope for rehearsing.
