Bill Gerhardt and COTANGENT

Or what I did tonight. After playing sophomore juries at the New School for the last three days and a session afterward, I decided I needed to relax. So me and Jeff Brillinger fell by Kitano's to hear COTANGENT, Bill Gerhardt's band. It was Bill on piano, Mike Holstein on bass, Tim Horner on drums and a front line of Marc Momaas on tenor and Ron Horton on trumpet/flugelhorn. Unbelievably wonderful. Marc is a freaking force of nature; deep, supple, beautiful sound in any range on the horn. Mike sounded great, he and Bill have a pretty deep simpatico. And I love the way Tim Horner plays. Some hard ****ing music, but they made it sound natural and inevitable.
If you can't hear'em play live, grab the CD. HIGHLY recommended.

Oh and I ran into Thomas Kneeland there, great player and a really nice cat!

It's been awhile, but I used to catch Mike Holstien around NC a bit and always found his playing very inspiring. Glad to hear he's still at it and making it up to the apple.
