boss dr. beat db-90 (free) software alternative?

Hey guys,
my bass teacher has one of these: http://www.bosscorp.co.jp/products/en/DB-90/index.html

It's fantastic. The key points are it is an excellent metronome with tone generator. Playing with a drone is critical for me as a young upright bassist as I am trying to perfect my pitch.

Does anyone know of any software (preferably free) that will do the same thing well?

A couple technical notes:
1) I have a mac with windows installed, so either OS will do. I even have a linux box if someone knows of some software for that as well.

2) I am a software developer by day, so if someone knows of a project where someone has started this, but it isnt ready for prime time, I'd be willing to work on it.
