Buying new bass for school

I am currently looking for a decent inexpensive bass for my school's Orchestra to purchase. Inexpensive being anything below 1,600. I may be able to get 2,000 but I am hoping to find something that will last that is not that much money. I am currently at Clarkson University and just starting up the orchestra.

I don't claim to be qualified to give advice about purchasing anything, but since nobody else is around...

You might post in the Wanted section:
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f13/

If you are inexperienced with buying DBs, check out the newbie links on buying to help inform the purchase:
BASS FORUM LINKS (Newbie Links): PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING NEW TOPICS

Do you have a luthier that you can consult with on the purchase?

Also, you should fill out your profile, including location ... Potsdam?

Good luck.

Check the Basses forum instead.
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f1/

All the info and help is there.
Take an hour to browse that forum a bit and use the search engine.
That question has been asked hundreds of times!

Good luck,
François

Well thank you for the references i will see what i can come up with.

No i do not have a luthier to consult with. I go to Clarkson which is the engineering college in Potsdam and have limited, if that, contacts with the music people over in crane or potsdam state.

I have been looking around and have seen some people referencing uptonbass, I was wondering what the overall opinion of what they produce and personal interactions with the company have been? I haven't come across many negative comments about them and was wondering if they would be a good choice to go with.

Upton can be a controversial subject. They are pretty well known and are supposed to have very good quality overall.

Nothing particularly controversial about Upton in particular (IMO) but it does get controversial when we get to talking about specific brands. In my current search for a new instrument I have played a number of makers that sound pretty darn good for their price point. Shen's seem to do pretty well overall, but I would love to get my hands on an Upton to try as they have gotten a lot of good reviews from other people.
