Can someone with a nice DB make a short (1 second) recording?

I have an EUB, and have been playing with convolution reverb. If you're unfamiliar with this technology, it combines signal with another, in such a way that you can give an instrument the resonance of a space. People usually use it to sample the reverberation characteristics of a particular room or concert hall, but it can be used for other creative purposes too.

In my case, I would like to convolve my EUB with a DB, to get something a little more realistic. All that would be required is to record yourself tapping the soundboard. The clip only needs to be about a second long, since the "reverb" inside a DB's body is so short.

Quality is not a huge issue, so anybody with any kind of recording setup and a nice bass would be doing me a huge favor, and it would only take a couple seconds. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Have you gotten any response on this yet?

By the way, what kind of EUB do you have? And how do you plan to deploy the convolution? In Logic, or something like that?

No responses yet, unfortunately. I have an Ergo EUB. I'm not sure how specifically I'll convolve them - I use Plogue Bidule as my environment, which has extensive spectral capabilities, and I also have a convolution plugin by SonicBirth. It's a nice one because the files don't need to be impulse response format, just wav files.

I find it way too processor intensive for real reverb (when other plugins will do the job with way less CPU usage) but it's fun to convolve a piano with a ride cymbal, for example.

Anyone out there willing to help? You don't need a really expensive bass or fancy recording equipment. Anything would be better than nothing.

This sounds really neat. I'd help out, but I don't think my Suzuki is quite what you've got in mind :P

I'd be interested to hear your results.

Eh... I suspect some DB forum in-joke is being made...? Sadly, as a mere wannabe doublebassist, I don't know what you're talking about. But, being VP of a DB company, you must have plenty of the things lying about, yes? Perhaps you could help out here...?

Actually no...no joke at all. Any humor in it was simply volunteering someone's time to do something! I just thought...based on what your trying to accomplish and DRURB's profession coupled with his quality of bass (ok, silently tooting my own horn here) and his publicly proven ability to record said bass...that this is something he might be able to whip up for ya relatively easily. I'll PM him on thiis thread if he hasn't already seen it.

Well, yes I do understand what you are trying to do. What you seem to want is a representation of the impulse response of a nice bass. Now, of course, when you convolve that response with your EUB, you probably know that the result will NOT sound like my bass. Ideally it will be your EUB played through my bass! I'll leave that to you. I'd be happy to record a tap of the top of my bass. One issue that will effect your results greatly is the position of the microphone that captures that tap. I could make a few different ones for you.

Now the best "tap" would be a very brief, powerful shot to the bass with a rather sharp object. Forget it! I don't allow Dirac deltas anywhere near my bass (geek joke). I'll tap it for you.

PM me if you're interested.

Lately my favourite bass-tapping implement is a Vic Firth American Custom T2 Cartwheel. I think its some kind of marching band drumstick.

The wooden head wrapped in dense felt makes a perfect substitute for the side of the thumb when tapping, whether checking for loose seams or tuning parts.
