ok, my bad. for practical application, it seems to me it's about how you use your body doing pretty much anything. maybe i shouldn't talk to people about it if i'm misleading them because of my poor understanding.

Substitute "self" for "body" and you've got it, since there is no behavior which is exclusively physical or exclusively mental. And yes, AT is a way of doing anything, rather than being a thing to do.

Hey Dobby,

It's good to hear you're on the mend!

OMG seriously!

I'm just trying to be helpful to a guy with CTS, not start an argument on the finer points of alexander technique.

Dobby, I've been studying with an alexander teacher on a weekly basis for 5 years, and I think it's the most helpful thing you can do in your situation. Be patient and keep in mind that jumping into things before you've fully recovered can do more harm again. Glad to hear that the surgery seems to have been a success!

Equilateral Ursa:
No argument.
In fact, my intent was to compliment you, since most people don't even come close to getting it. The specificity was not to correct you, but to reach the majority who have not experienced it, and to cite the one characteristic that keeps it from being lumped in as just another of of dozens of interchangeable "body work" modalities.
You embody the great paradox about AT: people come to it to get something fixed, and then stay with it long after the problem disappears. Who keeps seeing an orthopedist after the pain goes away? Obviously, AT is reaching something deeper than mere therapy. You get it. You're an independent witness to this, whereas I obviously have a vested interest. I post rarely, because it can appear that I'm just selling something. One consequence is that I try to explain it more than sell it. I admit hypersensitivity due to the fact that it is so much a part of my personal identity now.
My apology for the fussiness.
By any chance, is your teacher Bruce Oliver?
Peace.

i know a lot of people who work with bruce, including my teacher. i don't have an alexander coach per se, i study with a bass teacher who has been doing alexander technique for quite a long time, and he includes the concepts as a large part of his teaching approach. i'm thrilled that the school i'm going to next semester will offer alexander as a class for units, which i plan on taking every semester if they will let me.
