Check out my band's new website

I just finished the first phase of a new website for our string band. I'd love to get some feedback on it!!! I sure we'll be adding more as we are able. For example, I really want a sound clips area.

I am a hack, novice web developer (and bass player as well for that matter!! ), so be gentle.

It's a good sounding band. You know, oldtime and offshoots of oldtime music is very popular now. There is a whole wave of hip bands play this music. I see that your main gig is a pizzeria which is probably why you're using this photo shoot for all you pictures, it's the most professional looking. I would have to say that I think it looks a little static in contrast to how your music actually sounds. This is all just taste, I realize, but maybe you could get some new photos at your upcoming theatre gig that are more lively and show the band having a great time....more close ups on the faces etc. People connect with people, far away shots are ok but don't quite engage the same as a close up of someone pouring their heart into their music (slideshow?). This, to me, is far more interesting. People come to hear your music but they also come to see YOU. Ok, back to the site. The links are too big. Try going to some of your favorite artist websites and borrow as freely as you want from their designs. http://alisonkrauss.com/ People are using this swirly vine thing a lot lately which is nice. It's nice to have a theme to work off of. It's nice to use color artistically. I hope this isn't just "too much" advice but I am truly telling you what I feel when I look at the site.

Thanks Jason. The pizzeria gig is really our "get paid to rehearse" gig if there is such a thing. We have a pretty good following, and they are very forgiving when we roll something out that isn't as polished as we would have liked.

We have done a few top venue gigs already and have more booked. The work is steady. We did a wedding and I fear we have started a trend. We featured a caller and had a contra dancing reception. We have had several calls since from brides to be who want the same!

The photos I used on the site were done by a friend of mine who is a pro. I think they are very good, but I appreciate your point about the compelling nature of more "candid" shots. We have only been together a few months. I am sure the library will build up and give us more to work with.

Thank you also for the input on the details. I appreciate it. I really think I need a pro to help some.

Hey Chas, looks and sounds good! Here's my little hit-list:

I would find a way to get the music player to stay on when navving away from Home, and some volume controls and such. I really think the music player is a very high priority item on a band site, so prospective fans and venue owners can shuffle thru quick to get a feel for what you sound like. My opinion is the site should be built around it.

All black is a bit out of style, but not critical. The home photo looks good against it.

Not a big fan of the icon menu on the other pages, words tend to work better. I got dumbfused trying to figure out where to go next.

Contact: goes straight to email, which will only work for some and will be a problem for visitors who use webmail. You have no phone number or location info. A street address isn't necessary, but a town name is important for buyers to see right away. For email, I would recommend a web form built into the page so anyone can reach you from the browser.

As for the band, it's obvious you need a really, really loud drummer. Other than that you guys sound great. For band sites I prefer a one-page site that encompasses everything in one shot. Best way to fend off click-exhaustion that I know of.
