Chick Corea and Bela Fleck

I saw them playing a duo concert at the Brown theater last night after attending a masterclass with Chick at the U. It's amazing to see someone Chick's age who has maintained his enthusiasm for wrtiting and playing, and - more importantly - exploring. In his masterclass, he emphasized the importance of every musician retaining his/her identity as they continue to grow, and not being limited by classifications of style and imposed "taste".

This is definitely a lesson that I needed right about now. If you have a chance to catch these guys either live or on recording, it's definitely worth a listen.

That sounds like it was a wonderful concert. I'm always amazed at the musicianship. Guys at this level are very fluent in the "language" of music, so when they get together it's about the conversation they have with each other no matter who they are playing with. I was fortunate to see Bela Fleck, Stanley Clarke and Jean Luc Ponty together. I'm sure the interaction was similar to what you saw last night. Chick Corea has always been one of those dudes that doesn't seem to ever have a bad night although I'm sure its happened.

I saw Bela Fleck and Chick Corea at Florida State University in Tallahassee on Wed evening. It was very interesting, dense music they were playing. Their on stage banter helped put everybody at ease. It's good to see these absolute virtuoso players/improvisers don't take themselves too seriously.

I just got their CD and am really digging it. It's a good lesson in Duo playing for sure. Listening to this sent me into a 'Chick' phase. Now He Sings....., The Piano Concerto and the great Symphonic piece based on Spain with Avishai Cohen followed.
Chick is a master musician who is also a pianist. Fine composer and arranger.
Bela is impossible to categorize. Maybe a great banjo player with a love of many musical styles with a sense of humor?
