Comeback on DB

This is my first (hopefully, of many) post in the DB forum.
I started playing DB when I was ten and played in a classical orchestra for six years got really tired of it and picked up bass guitar instead and have played it since (now I'm 22).
A couple of days ago I found out a friend of mine is selling a DB he's inherited.
I've been over and played it and realised I want to start playing DB again!
The thing is he doesn't know anything about the bass, when it's built, who built it or so. The only marking on it is a sign where it says it's been repaired in 1962. The person he inherited it from has played with Stan Getz in stockholm, so I don't think he would by any crap...
The bass looks quite old, has a few cracks and so on, but sounds quite good in my untrained ears.

What should I check before buying the bass?
The cracks don't affect the sound do they?
I thought it was really hard to find intonation and press down the strings but i expect i'll become used to that in time or should I lower the action instead?

If these questions are commonly asked, please direct me to the apropriate threads.

Have you looked through this one yet?

Aside from that, the best advice I have is to take it to a luthier ASAP. It's kind of like having your mechanic look at a used car before you buy it - always a good idea. Good luck.
