Question Copyrights and Myspace

This might be a supid question.

Can only original music be legally posted?
This is not in reference to performance but to the writer.

If so is their a way of finding out what is public domain and what is copyrighted?

You can only post songs to which you own the copyright on MySpace. The best way to check copyright ownership is through the Harry Fox Agency. Their website allows you to do this, and that service is free.

In Canada, you can check with the CMRRA, Canadian Music Recording Rights Association.

(Company name is deceiving, they deal with all music, not just the Canadian stuff, and searches are free - last time I used them)
