BTW I think the current Rbar ticket policy sucks. Under the old management, you could stay for the second set for 50% off and Thursday shows were one ticket for two sets. No more!!!
I'm down from going there once a month to going once a year (when Dave is in town). Top it off with all their non-jazz bookings (the headliner of this year's "Regattabar Jazz Festival" was Judy Collins, ***?) and jacked up covers, it's bad news all around. |

The ticket price are steep for just one show, and the artists usually tend to play short sets since they apparently don't relize a set is a show to most concert goers.... Frustrating. But damn, that place is a good place to see shows. I saw the Bad Plus there along with Kurt Rosenwinkle.
I think Im going to try and make the 1st set on Sunday.

Antonio Hart is subbing for Chris Potter again.
Dave was playing a Czech-Ease bass which not suprisingly didn't sound as good as his usual bass (which I assume is in the shop for some reason).
I had a seat right next to Nate Smith so I heard the drums very, very well
The set was indeed cut short by a good 30 minutes as I mentioned in my earlier post. I've really had it with the Regattabar...$52 for 2 tickets, $18 for 2 drinks, $12 for parking = $82 for a five song set (it would have been $134 if I had bought tickets for both sets)
Oh well, I'm off to NYC next week and will be raped even worse for the shows I'll be seeing there. |

Heard Chris Potter had an ear infection and couldn't fly, so they performed as a quartet. Still burnin'. I got to speak to Mr. Holland briefly after the show. Very humble and generous.

About 90 minutes, very extended pieces ranging from "Prime Directive" to "Secret Garden" off the new one. Needless to say, I would have loved to see two sets for those bux but this glass was much more than half full.
It was a disappointment not to see Chris Potter, who's one of my heroes. Antonio Hart was very good but not fully integrated into the band.
I said a very brief "Thanks for all the music" to Dave before the show. He was gracious. (What can I say to someone whose music has meant so much to me for over thirty years, and to whom I am a total stranger? "Dooood! You rawk, mahn! Folkin' A, mahn!")
Dave was playing the Gage Half-a-Bass. I played one for the first time Friday afternoon and it sounded SERIOUSLY WEAK, MAHN unplugged (although the board was nicely planed). I heard Dave play his Friday night before the PA came on, through the GK 112 and a GK 4x12 cab. It sounded like Dave Holland . . . with a sheet over his amp. Through the PA the sound ranged from "sheet over" to "blanket over" but thankfully never got to "quilt over" or "box over."
Man, that band is so amazingly good. And Dave takes so much joy in it.

I too had seats almost behind the drums (at the bar) but still enjoyed the show emensly. They all cooked but Nate was especially stellar on the skins. BTW, made it to Smalls as well and caught Ari Roland. Dug his arco solos.
