Dealing with airlines

I am taking a Northwest Airlines flight to Tokyo, and called to see how much money it would cost to have the bass (in a david gage case). They told me it would be 3 excess baggage charges totalling $390!!!

To all you seasoned bass travellers: is there any way around this exorbitant charge? The case itself is allready putting me back plenty. Any advice how to deal with the airline to avoid this cost, or at least reduce it.

Thanks

-Jason

I just flew from Australia to Saudi Arabia with my new bass, still in it's 2 metre x 70 cm x 50 cm box and I just checked it at Brisbane as a piece of luggage. Maybe you should just turn up with it and try checking it in?

Hehehe, when I walked up with it (on a trolley) the guy said "what's in the box", I said "a double bass" and he said "that's one of those big ones, isn't it?"

You could have jumped on the case and given him a demonstration.
