Deflation trend?

I think we've known for awhile (since the recession began) that this is a buyers market for basses. How far is this going to go though? I'm seeing beautiful carved basses for sale at such incredibly low prices. I'm not terribly worried about my investments (I bought my basses to play, not to make any profits), but at some point this trend has to be really affecting our favorite shops & luthiers.

Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere. I searched and didn't a "deflation thread."

Quality, hand-made instruments are holding their value quite well. At the opposite end, cheap stuff is flooding the market, and when you have too many things for sale, and not enough buyers, prices tend downward. The better "brands" of student/ semi-professional basses limit their output somewhat in order to keep up with quality standards and keep their prices steady. In a nutshell, unless you have an ebay special or other "craptastic" bass, you are probably fine. But don't expect a new, commercially-made instrument to gain value.

Thanks for your perspective on this. It's just that lately some pretty nice basses have been listed in the Talk Bass Classifieds for what seems to be bargain prices.
