Double Bass???

Excuse my ignorance but *** is a double bass?

There are often instruments which are so incredible one needs two of them. In other words, the bass "doubles" the cello, which is the bass instrument of the strings. Thus, the double bass is twice as good as the cello.

And now for something completely different...

Double bass is just the snooty highbrow jazzbo term for upright bass, double because it's twice as big as the other instruments. I prefer the snooty highbrow term "bass viol" myself, but they taught that it was called the bass viol in schools, so that wasn't snooty enough for jazzbos.
