Double Bass painting

Hi fellas, I hope someone here might know a thing or two about painting on a double bass. I've been wanting to paint some artwork on my bass for the longest time but I'm not sure exactly how to go about it. So, here's what I'm wondering:

- is it a good idea? Does painting the instrument affect its sound quality?
- What kind of paints should I use? I usually paint with acrylics, but if there is a special kind of paint for this sort of job I don't really know about it.
- Do I need to paint the surface with gesso, binder, something else?
- Any special precautions I should keep in mind?

Any other help would be much appreciated, I have no idea what to do. I don't want to ruin my bass. Thanks!

Hey man....no problem! Nothin' to worry about.....Just make sure not to bother with a laminated bass. Hopefully, your bass is an old, carved bass. Italian ones hold the paint real good i've heard....If you could find one made by a guy named DaSalo, that would be very cool!

GASP! Painting a bass?! Oh the humanity....

I have no idea what to tell you since I have no idea what you're actual intent is... To refinish the entire instrument? Do a coupla small details here and there? What kind of bass is it?

As for me, I'm sticking with my trusty Crayola washable finger paints.
