I would estimate 75% of the people there were musicians and there was a jam going on upstairs. There was no doublebass in the house but there was an electric. I watched and listened a bit and lamented that I couldn't join in. Then, without warning, a friend of mine said "Jason, get in here and play"!. I sat there stunned and said what I always say "no way, I haven't played an electric bass in 20 years". But I thought for a second and reconsidered. "What the hell", I thought, "who the hell am I trying to impress" and launched over and strapped the thing on. You know what, it was fun as hell. Because I had no relationship to it I just played whatever the hell I wanted to, and it felt good. I had a handful of fine bass players gathered around me egging me on and I just had a ball. Of course, I also got a nasty blister on the tip of my plucking finger because I never use that part of it for upright...but I will say, it was an ear opening experience. I don't think I'll run out and get one anytime soon but it was cool to step over to the "light" side and play some music for music's sake without any self imposed limitations. Anyone else have an electric affair they want to get off their chest?

I know that blister, right on the fingertip... yeowtch!! Just don't use that part much anymore. |

| | | | I still play electric bass quite a bit between repairs and equipment reviews. It's been a couple years since an actual gig though. Nothing works for me like my DB and while I miss the Pbass through SVT sometimes I think I'm not there so much as a musician right now.
Wanna talk about affairs though, I'm rekindling my front man days and have picked up my 1946 Gibson J45 for a bunch of singer songwriter and small band things this year. Nothing quite like Guitar and Voice to do a soul good. And I get to dust off some of my old tunes. Might even write a new one.... |

It was great fun and it sounded great. My old blond PBass was set up by John Caruthers and Jim Demeter for session work. It is quiet as a mouse in terms of noise but it sounds and plays great. I also have a 1960 fretless jazz body with a 1962 Pbass neck that couldn't take another fret job. Ha I said fret on the DB side!
