faking a tux?

Got a call today for a big band gig...they want me to wear a tux. Can I just buy a tuxedo shirt and bowtie and wear it with my black suit? is that close enough or will I look funny? Thanks

any other suggestion would be nice, I dont have the money or enough gigs to justify buying a tux and its not worth renting one.

well...

While I wouldn't do it personally (I own one), I have seen guys do it. It looks a bit funny up close but the audiience can't tell. Especially when you have a bass in front of you.

That will be probably fine as long as your shoes and suit aren't too ragged. I've done it on several occasions. Your bass will cover a good part of visible area anyway. Of course, the bandleader could make a fuss, but I doubt it. Most big band leaders have more to worry about than if the bass players wearing a black suit with bowtie instead of a tux.

cheap tux

this is probably too late, but I got a really inexpensive but 1st quality tux for less than $70 from the Tuxxman in Miami. He ships to anywhere in the US.

You should definitely get one of those tuxedo t-shirts and black jeans. Nothing says "call back" like to proper gear!!

I did it for years. When the gig starts, absolutely no one cares.

You could always just get the tux tattoo and be done with it.

Rental shops sell off old tuxes cheaply- mainly to musicians, I suspect.
