Favorite Brazilian Artists

In another thread PW mentioned a few Brazilian musicians that I love and don't think are quite well enough known here. Just wondering who the rest of you may be listening to and loving. Paul's abbreviated list included Joao Bosco, Simone Pedacos, Ivan Lins, Elis Regina and Tonino Horta.

I'd want to add Elis Reginas' daughter Maria Rita, Trio de Paz, Djavan, and Milton Nacimento to the rotation that I listen to regularly. Anybody else have some favorites that I might really like to add to this list?

Here is a duet with Rosa Passos and Ivete Sangalo that leaves me weak in the knees.

Chico....

Great thread topic, Chris.
Your clip was so beautiful, as were both ladies.
I like Chico Buarque, as well as the ones you mentioned.
Here he is with Milton on an old clip doing his tune O Que Sera.
I did some posts here a while back talking about the political statements hidden in the lyrics of some of the older Brazilian tunes. This is one of those....I'm recording this as a bass solo soon.....

There is so much good music outta Brazil, damn!

I love Gal Costa, Jorge Ben, Os Mutantes, though they are more on the pop/rock side of things.

For Samba there is Jorge Aragao who is fantastic as well.

gonna be a long list.

I've got to check out Milton Banana, Daude and Jorge Aragao as I'm not familair with them at all at this point. Yea, it'll be a long list.......

Thumbs up

Have you seen the duo DVD of Ceasar Camargo Mariano and Romero Lobambo? Those guys leave me on the floor! One of the greatest piano/guitar duos I've heard.
Funny how years ago I didn't think much of Sergio Mendes. Of course I was into Led Zepplin back then, so that might account for it. But now I realize his bands have always been burning!
I've got a good sampling of Egberto- always loved the trio records with Jan Garbarek and Charlie Haden. That blending of cultures that makes Brazil what it is seems to make the trio work also.
I dug what I checked out of Jorge Aragao.....

Bebel Gilberto (Astrud's daughter) was doing some nice bossa/pop stuff. Haven't heard any recent output from her.

I grew up with a Brazilian Auntie/cousins in the family, so I was heavily exposed (for a white boy living in the armpit of Canada) to all the classic stuff at an early age. Brazil '66, Jobim, etc etc.

Did anyone else crack up at Sergio Mendes playing with The Black Eyed Peas in "Be Cool"? Felt like I was the only one in the theatre laughing at that one...

Haven't seen that, have to check it out. I played a concert over the summer, Luciana Souza, and Romero was the guitarist. He's great! And Luciana is fantastic, too.

I got to hang with Cesar and bassist Luizao Maia many years ago in Sao Paolo at a couple of clubs. We had a jam session - big fun, and their playing was quite a revelation to me.

That album (and DVD) is on my "Top Ten/ Desert Island" list. Incredible.

+ 10 zillion on Gal Costa as well. Ivan Lins, especially for the writing.

And of course, Hermeto Pascoal.

Here is a clip from the Camargo/Lubambo duo. There is a lot more of them on YouTube. This is such a great DVD, great production values. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDcYSyPnGtQ

I'm not sure if he's been mentioned previously, but Seu Jorge is one my favorites. He's an acoustic guitar player often playing solo or with a variety of accompaniment. If anyone is familiar with Wes Anderson's 'The Life Aquatic,' he's the crew member who does Portuguese renditions of David Bowie songs. He actually has an album solely composed of Bowie covers, which is excellent! He's done a few great performances up at Montreux, but I can't seem to find them on Youtube, so here's a cover of Rock and Roll Suicide by Bowie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc2sFlrUhzk. Enjoy!

Just went through some of my records and came up with some other names worth checking out. Paulinho da Viola (classic Choro), Bola Sete, Marisa Monte, Banda Reflexu's, Doris Monteiro, Joao Donato, Tania Maria, Marcos Valle.

And for any Sugarhill Gang fans:

Of course! Why didn't I think of him? His first album had some great stuff on it (not as familiar with the Bowie covers). This one was actually produced by Mario Caldato Jr., who is probably best known for his work with the Beastie Boys:

A friend knows how much I like Brazilian music & gave me 2 tickets he can't use to see/hear Luciana Sousa's Trio on Jan 22.

Do any of you know her music? I don't think I have heard her before & my library doesn't have any of her disks.

Can you tell me anything about Luciana Sousa?

All I can tell you is that she is a wonderful singer with a natural, pure voice and style. I think you will enjoy her!
