flash player for recording?

Hi,
I'm a very satisfied owner of a 60G ipod. From what I've heard the ability to use the ipod as a recording device is quite limited, and useable only for voice memos. As I am interested in a small mp3-player for recording rehersals and practice, I'm in the market of those small flash players with build in mic and line-in. I would love to hear if there are anyone on the forum who has experience on this subject!

best regards TD

Here's a thread on the subject. I like the looks of the Edirol R-09.

On the cheap side, I have a 1G iRiver ifP 800 that records in MP3. Cost about $100 new, I think (it was a hand-me-down from my sister, who couldn't figure out how to use it). It has a built in microphone, but I added an outboard stereo mike- there's a jack for that. Makes a nice portable MP3 recording setup that fits in a shirt pocket.

Ok I did a search on the Internet. Apparently there are two different gadgets that looks like the perfect sollution (for a ipod video owner). Both appear to be available pretty soon:

MicroMemo™ High-Fidelity Digital Audio Recorder for iPod with video. Records 16-bit audio at 22kHz and 44kHz with a build in microphone or external mic with a 3.5mm-plug. Features also a build in speaker (list price $60):

TuneTalk™ Stereo for iPod® with video featuring two "high-quality" omnidirectional microphones, CD quality stereo recording, Real time adjustable gain for changing noise levels and External microphone adapter (3.5mm stereo), (list price $70):

I would suggest the iRiver flash mp3 player with an external mic. You can get one of those small stero mics from Sony for about $50-150 depending on how much you want to spend. All of them sound really good. And they have a few shapes and sizes if that's an issue.

I have the iRiver H340 which is a 40GB mp3 player and has the recording function and it works great. A friend of mine has the little iRiver flash player and uses an external mic to record his drum lessons, also works great.

Hope this helps

I've been using my Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 for a couple of years now and I'm still blowing the minds of my colleagues with it -- wonderful for live recording (thanks again, Phil, for the recommendation.) I use a stereo mic/pre-amp combo from Sound Professionals -- it's OK but I'd probably do something else if I was to make the mic decision again.

The Nomad 3 -- and it's the 3 you want for recording, none of the others -- is based on a laptop hard-drive. Not RAM and not a micro-drive, so it's a bit Cro-Magnon in 2006. 20GB hard drive. Records in all varieties of CD and MP3. It does FireWire and USB for transfer to the PC. Transfers are easy and no-hassle, unlike what you get with any Sony MiniDisc product -- not sure about HiFashionPods.

An hour-long set of live music recorded at CD resolution is going to cost you something more than 1GB in file size. There are many digital recording units out there that may have storage measured at well over 1GB but lack the ability to deal with huge files -- check that out, too.

Thanks guys! I think I will wait for the coming products for the video ipod. It looks also like the cheapest alternative.

Hey, your're welcome Damon, the Nomad IS great even though I've been using the Edirol R-1 for the last year and a half. But I do miss the Nomad when I'm recording and miss stuff because I forgot to clean up the compact flash card prior to starting.
