Gigs in New York next week?

Hi everybody. I'm off on holiday to the states on Friday, will be spending most of the time with friends and girlfriend's family in Boston, but I'll be fulfilling a life-long dream of going to New York on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I'm hoping to catch some great jazz in the city while I'm there, what can you guys recommend? Looks like I've missed John Scofield by a couple of days, and I haven't really heard of most of the other people I see in gig listings.

I've noticed that the Mingus Big Band plays every tuesday night, are they worth a look?

I'm also hoping to go to David Gage's shop and have a look at a Czech Ease bass while I'm in town - can anybody suggest how to get there, the website isn't very clear?

Thanks in advance - I'll be sure to return the favour if anybody is heading to the South West of England!

Dorian

i think to get to gage's you take the A, B, or C to Canal Street and you can walk down the platform and walk up to street-level right at Walker Street.

Pick up a Village Voice when you get here. Or check here http://www.villagevoice.com/ . I can lead to a great rock show wednesday night, but you wouldn't like it.

This is a direct quote from myself from different thread. I was replying to someone whose friend was headed to New York and wanted to see a show or two:

Quote:
In Brooklyn there's the Tea Lounge, Barbés, Zebulon, and Bar 4 (that's what comes to mind right now, but I know there's even more). In Manhattan you have the Village Vanguard (which may be a bit out of her price range), The Stone (might be too "experimental"), Smalls, Jimmy's No. 43, The Jazz Standard, Louis 649, Bowery Poetry Club, Downtown Music Gallery...that's all I can think of right now, but I know there's more.

*Oh yeah, in Manhattan there's also the 55 Bar, The Jazz Gallery, Sweet Rhythm, Jules Bistro, Cornelia Street Cafe, The Bar Next Door, and Zinc Bar (good place for Brazilian music).

Have her pick up a copy of "All About Jazz", which has lots of show listings in the back.

And yes, pick up a copy of "All About Jazz" for complete listings. The Village Voice is good too, but I feel like for jazz, All About Jazz covers a lot more (and it shows listings for a month's worth of shows).

Oh yeah, and if you need help with which subways to take (and if you can plan this ahead of time):

East Village hang

Hi Dorian,
I am sure you'll be enjoying your stay in NYC. If you don't have other plans on Wednesday, you can come hang at Ten Degrees, a bar in the East Village located at 121 St. Marks Place (which is an alternate name for East 8th St), between 1st Avenue and Avenue A. I am playing trio with drummer Dan Aran and tenor saxophonist Eli Degibri (who played in Herbie Hancock's Quartet for three years). 10pm-1am, no cover charge.
