| | | | Good energy drink/snack for practicing I was wondering if there is any type of food or drink that can help increase concentration and focus without the usual jitters, any thoughts?

An entire loaf of french bread, sliced lengthwise and done up with three or four kinds of meat, cheese...the works.
If I went to town on one end for a few minutes, I'd get it shortened up enough that it would fit on top of my amp while we rehearsed all afternoon. Whenever the singer and drummer would start arguing about a song, I'd have something to snack on til they were done. When we broke for 'dinner' I'd usually still be working on it
Made the day go a little quicker.

You can buy it as pre-brewed iced tea at many corner stores and health food stores. My favorite brand is Guayaki, especially the mint and raspberry flavors, but there are other good brands. If you're on a budget you can buy the tea in teabags, stuff a couple into a bottle of water, and make sun tea. |

If you have a long rehearsal, half-way through, try some almonds with an apple. I also suggest drinking water before and during practice. The other thing you can try is putting the almonds into some yogurt.
Also, the water will keep you hydrated, the yogurt/almonds/fruit will keep you smooth and regular.
IME, drinking water through out the day may help your kidneys from forming stones. |

- Repeating practicing sequences of twos; two hours practice, two Lucky Strikes, two cups of espresso, black and sweet. Repeat entire sequence 3 or 4 times a day to develop technical facility, poor overall health, and the jitters. I did this in my late teens and early twenties, with predictable results.
- Repeating sequences of two hours of practice, two hits on a joint, two cups of espresso, black and sweet. Repeat as above, daily, to develop good technical facility, social isolation, drug addiction, and the jitters. Hard to remember things you learn with this regimen. Faithfully adhered to this nutrient blend in my mid twenties, with barely remembered results.
- Repeating on-the-gig sequence; two hits on a joint, two shots of Canadian Club, play one set, repeat. Mix with strong coffee as needed. Results are loose, engaged playing, forgetfulness, uneven performance, ongoing blackout (can last for months while gigging steadily), eventual depression, suicidal thinking, progression of drug addiction. Not sustainable, or recommended, for me, anyway...
- Current regimen of big glass of water before playing chased by a cup of green tea made with two bags (if feeling droopy), practice as long as my other obligations will allow it, usually just long enough to almost get started. Results are decent mental clarity, good hydration and energy. Chops and musicianship lower than ever, but I remember what happens from day to day...for better or worse...

This was American beer, so of course it probably had no effect on him. He actually owns his own brewery in the UK. |
