Good (Sympathetic) Vibrations

A gig I'm doing Sunday is a program of pieces for concert band and organ. We were rehearsing at Sacred Heart Cathedral, a humungous space. The organ has over 2,000 pipes, including many 32-footers.
First piece, final note, low F, played blastissimo. As I put my finger down, the organ laid into a deep F and my bass almost blew apart. I didn't even need the bow.

That's why I love acoustic instruments.

Anybody else have experiences with sympathetic vibrations?

An early draft of my String Quartet included them in the first four measures. I replaced them with rests though.

Thumbs up

Red Mitchell told me he had much the same experience as you did, Dono, while his Dad played a big church organ. (though not as big as the one you describe, I don't think).

Many times when I am practicing at a house or something certain notes will make a hinge ring, or a picture frame, or something in the room vibrate.
