Gustavo Dudamel (LA Phil Music Director)

I was skeptical about this appointment until last night. Watching the PBS Great Performances broadcast from a players' perspective, I'm beginning to think he's a borderline brilliant conductor. Anyone on this board have any experience playing for him?

Additionally, the featured soloist, tenor Juan Diego Florez, was equally brilliant. What. A. Voice. Think Pavarotti without the BS.

I am an LA Phil subscriber and I also was skeptical. Quite honestly every concert I have attended with Dudamel conducting has been exceptional. He is not a wild man at all (though that seems to be the way they're selling his long-haired image). He is humble and visibly gives all credit to the musicians. He doesn't even take bows from the podium - he walks into the orchestra so that they get the same applause as he does.

I know a few musicians in the orchestra and they have nothing but nice things to say about him. If you are ever in LA you should experience Disney Hall and the LA Phil - make plans well in advance because Dudamel is selling out most of his concerts!

Our local Cineplex is showing a live "simulcast" of the LA Phil with Dudamel conducting next Sunday. I'll definitely go and try to drag my two violinist daughters along with me.
