Has anyone played the book for 9 to 5?

I am doing a run with the show 9 to 5 in oct. and I am curious if anyone has played it yet. Unfortunately the show is based on the "hit" Dolly Parton flick of the same name. I guess my question is this: Is it really as horrible as it sounds? A whole damn show of Dolly Parton inspired music! I need to know what kind of sedatives will be required to dull the pain.
Before somebody comes the the rescue, this isnt a diss on Dolly Parton, I just dont dig what she does. Time to put the game face on.

Why are you playing it? The producers would probably prefer having a bassist who was into the show a little more, and not relying on horse tranquilizers just to get through it.

My friend Mike Buono, an established jazz drummer, played with Dolly Parton for quite some time. He has nothing but good to say about the experience.

I guess sarcasm doesnt carry over well on the internet. Relax. Nobody says that you have to love all of the music that you perform. I' m sure it is a well written show, and I think the producer would be perfectly happy with someone who comes in and nails the book with good time and feel.

And unfortunately no tits to be seen from the orchestra pit.

Hey, man, I've known Buono for almost forty years. If there's any tits in the vicinity, he'll be lookin' and they don't have to be Dolly's either.

I realize I'm a bass guitarist, but liking the music and preforming it are always completely different in that I almost always enjoy preforming, regardless of the type of music and how I feel about listening to it. If money is involved....even better.

Also, + 1 @ breasts

He told me this; "Best hugs in the business".

At least I think he said "hugs".

If I were any more relaxed, I'd be droolin'. Still wondering why you're playing music you don't want to.

Wink Hmm

This thread seems to be a great example of the Lost art of the society gig thread. If the only thing you find of value is the money, that's pretty sad. I've known a number of people who have played and recorded with Dolly. By all accounts she is a great lady and treats people very well. Also there's those "HUGE TRACTS OF LAND"

Well, Treyzer, to be fair to Big B., he's not actually playing with Dolly's... oops, er, I mean Dolly..... he's just playing a run of a show based on her tunes. Depending on the company... well, you and I both know how that goes. I've done so many of those shows over the years, and I mostly remember the good ones... musta blocked out the others. The production can make all the difference, regardless of the music you're playing.

Gotta say, though.... a bunch of Dolly's music played by a guy named "Big B" just seems so right.

You guys!! There arent enough smilies to express myself. I think I just peed my pants! Fortunately I listened to some of the tunes and they sound more gospel influenced than country so that is a bonus for the bassist. I actually find doing these shows very entertaining. I enjoy the prodution aspect and find it exciting to be part of a show that is far bigger than just the music. I still cant get over you guys.

Two reasons:

1: Even though I am not a fan of Dolly's music I enjoy performing music on a high level. I cant possibly be the only bassist here who has taken a gig that wasnt their cup of tea. It is part of being a professional, do the job well and check your personal feelings at the door.

2: I enjoy eating food when I get hungry.

Actually, sometimes there are more reasons to take a gig other than the love of the music or the bread, especially double bassists. In the last coupla years i've taken less than perfect gigs in terms of the music or the $'s simply because I need to keep my chop up so I can play my lick on hipper gigs.
The opportunity to look at some swell live tits is sometimes better than sitting at home and, and........
EDIT: And hey Marcus, Buono dint spent all that time with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band for the love of the music and the bread. Tits.........

Great answers. I did a year and a half on a cruise ship, I know about that.... actually, I enjoyed a lot of that... except for the music, mainly.

It's funny, he seems to have enjoyed that gig. Mike's a guy that throws himself into any gig he does. He talks about that gig (and Dolly's) with the same enthusiasm that he shows when he talks about his work with Quincy Jones or the Grusins. When he talks about his time with Dionne, though, his face scrunches up a little . One of my favorite Buono stories is his "audition" interview with Peggy Lee. LOL

I have always thought that might be an interesting gig while I am still reasonably young and single.

And in the event of an emergency my full size bass could double as a life raft.
