Havent played my upright for literally years...

So I havent played my upright bass for literally years... Probably 4-5 years...

Strings are still in good shape, but boy I certainly do not have the calluses I used to! I used to play restaurant gigs unplugged all the time... I was asked to play one tonight so I said sure, they were expecting me to bring my electric, but I really felt like playing my upright since its so beautiful and havent played it for a very very long time...

I knew this would happen...

Well done, blisters are a sign you care :-) Sometimes you just have to suffer for your art.....

Pic was taken following a three hour audition on upright for a local blues band.

3 Hour audition? They couldn't figure out you were good or not after 1 hour?? Ouch.

Ohhhhh, snap. I hate it when stuff ends like that. Seems like I've always lost the gigs where I worked the hardest.

Uh---don't you mean pickups? Bows are great, don't get me wrong. I use mine a lot, especially for practice, but it does not solve any volume problems---unless you are playing in a Romanian restaurant!

Good God, Man! Those look horrible. I am so glad those aren't my fingers. I had blisters as a kid and my fingers bled a few times (from guitar not bass), but they never looked like that. Take care so they don't get infected. ouch...

geeeeeeeeeeez

and I thought MY blisters from upright are bad. well, my strings are super old too, and rough as hell. still, I only get a couple small blisters on my index finger. Nothing like that. sometimes you just gotta drain that sucker and take it like a man.

upright bass, I swear. Figures the most laborious instrument to play is also the most unappreciated.

Heh, that's an old picture from months ago, the blister healed up very nicely afterwards, although my guitarist friends were very impressed by it. Like the OP, my main instrument is bass guitar and I really wasn't expecting to play that much upright on that audition. The blues band had other ideas.

Isn't that the truth...?

I agree upon that that's unfortunately true.. Seems like sometimes history and beauty together are stupid combination for people But anyway, it's not the reason not to play it, so rock on

I think you've got too much fingertip in your pizz. Think more about using the side of your index finger. Especially for blues, where the idea is to lay down a simple line and a big fat sound.

EDIT: In a classic case of speak first, think later, I just read your profile. You probably don't need advice like that from the likes of me! I'll leave it up anyway for posterity, but don't take it personally!

It looks like it'll be another 4-5 years till you play it again. Send me your bass, I'll be happy to keep it warm till the time comes.

I def use the side of my finger... thats why the blister is more on the side and long ways up the rest of the side of my finger isnt that bad, but still soar... can feel the calous building up already which is a good thing!

cant really get the side of your middle finger to dig in as much...

feels really good to play the upright again though thats for sure!
