As Brent points out, if you want a general purpose solution in just one program (to do the slow down, to do transposition, to write the resulting files to different formats, etc), you're going to have to go to some kind of DAW (digital audio workstation) solution. Audacity is an excellent quality open source (i.e, FREE) tool. There's a big whack of commercial software that falls into the same category: Pro Tools, Cubase, etc...

Just so. I think Audacity is the best choice here, commercial programs notwithstanding. I don't really use it myself, but I think it's great, because it calls the various functions by intuitive names for those who aren't familiar with terms like "bounce" etc, and there isn't so much in there as to be overwhelming for a non-ambitious user.

All that said, I just reread the original post, and if she can spend a little money for a commercial program, I think she wants Band In A Box. You just put the chords (and melody if needed) in, and it makes an instant backing track for you. Maybe the feel isn't competitive with the guys on an Aebersold, but it'll get the job done, certainly good enough for auditioning purposes.

Jgbass, I'll assume your audition is coming up soon, and you'd like to spend your time practicing and not messing about with computers. If you would like, give me the name of the tune, the key, and the number of choruses, and I'll knock it out for you this time. It won't take me more than a few minutes. For the next one you're on your own.

Brent
