Horror Pops Custom Bass - Check it out

This month's issue of Bass Player (Oct/05) arrived and there are two photos of a custom bass used by Patricia Day of the Horror Pops, a Danish rock band. It has an oversize guitar shape to it with an interesting paint job.

There is a short article about her, her bass, and the band on page 18. And she is in a Gallien-Krueger ad on page 1.

I know we talk about traditional acoustic basses here, but I thought this was one that is a little outside-of-the-box.

Patricia's basses are made by her husband, Kim Nekroman, who is not only guitarist of the Horrorpops but the leader of the band Nekromantix. He is possibly the fastest psychobilly slapper I've ever heard. If I'm not mistaken, that bass in the picture was smashed up for the cover shot of their new album and he made her a new bass that looks almost identical for Christmas.

Of course, all this good stuff is lost on these guys here, as they mostly feel that psychobilly is slightly less musical than someone playing a saw with a bow, so a more receptive audience might be found at www.rockabillybass.com.

I thought the same thing about the album cover shot, but the more I look at it, I think it is a computer generated picture of the bass in pieces.

Granted, I've spent most time on the EB forums than on the DB ones, but most of them seem to be jazz players, with some rock. I'm becoming more acquanted with DB, as mine is en route to my house now, and once I learn to play, it's gonna be pyschobilly. So I guess I'm really asking, how many here are into rockabilly/pyschobilly?

Still like this site better than rockabilly bass, style of music isnt everything. Thanks for all the help guys, here and in every other thread.

I don't think anybody gives a **** whether it's psychobilly or japanese or greek music or not. The point is: once you strip away the paint and the shock value, do you have anything to say musically?

Hey, I'm not real big into this kind of music, but I found the link plenty entertaining. I like women, weird basses, and tattoos though. Heck, I even slap the bass some. Hey...

alot of pyschobilly doesn't have alot underneath the "paint and shock value" (well put, btw), but that..style..serves as a cover for many that do, there are imposters in every genre that don't sit well with everyone.

If you haven't heard it, it's worth a listen. Robbie Fulks is a very musical songwriter.

I am in Orlando this week for a business conference.

I decided to check out the House of Blues for dinner and I find out that the concert there that night was the Horrorpops opening up for the Dropkick Murphys, so I bought a ticket and checked them out.

The Horrorpops were fun to watch and listen to. She had the same decked out double bass as in the photos and played very simple slap bass lines as she was doing all of the singing. I know she will probably not be the next Ray Brown, but it was a fun evening just the same.
