Yep--tilt the passenger seat back and lay the bass in on its side--neck facing backwards, towards the back seat, bridge facing the driver. I was easily able to get my bass into a jetta this way.

You put the neck in first. The bottom side of the bass rests on the floor, the lower seat cushion fits (if you're lucky) into the waist, and you can adust the seatback to fit. I suppose the bridge could face away from the driver is that's easier.

Many suggest that the bass be put in "backwards," i.e., with the body supported on it's back by the passenger seat and the neck pointed toward the floor in front of that seat. That doesn't work in my car (Volvo S80) because the headrest on the driver's seat prevents swinging in the body of the bass. So, I recline the passenger seat fully and push it all the way back. Then, I put the bass in on its back with the neck resting on the rear-seat headrest. Finally, I raise the passenger seat so that its headrest supports the bass right in the region of the neck block.

I do it similar to PB+J, but the bass is lying on its back. I then sinch the seatbelt over the neck around the neck-joint-area and make sure the scroll isn't touching the floor as I do not want to stress the neck joint over bumps. The endpin is about an inch away from the rear headrest when in position.

This is in a VW Passat (B5.5).

These ways all work and are common,
I have a friend who gets a 7/8 size DB into an Echo (one of the smallest cars available).

You can get it into any car on its back on the passanger seat. If it proves difficult, what you can do is recline BOTH seats, then stick the bass in the driver side back door scroll first. this allows more room to manuver the bass. once in, you cna put the driver seat back up.

I transport my DB with the front passenger seat reclined and the scroll facing up and to the rear of the car and attach a quick release strap to the gig bag and the rear handle at the ceiling of the car. I drive a Mercedes 300E and the arm rest flips up and keeps the bass right in place with no movement.

This just might be a record- two basses, one cello, three people in a VW Beetle- high school, 1968.

More recently- three basses and five people in my 2000 Honda Odyssey (NOT very comfortably at all)

Should the bass be in a gigbag, or should there not be a gigbag to allow for more room?

Jazzin', there are certain situations when your bass is out of its bag:

When it's on the stand
When you're playing it
Maybe between sets

That is it.

Sorry, I don't understand this.

"When it's in the stand." You mean on the bandstand, or in a bass stand?

"Maybe between sets." Are you're saying you bag up your DB between sets when you go on break? No way. Really?
