How to get a reliable appraisal?

Even though this is about a violin, I'm hoping that I can get some advice in this forum.

A friend of mine recently inherited a violin that has a label indicating it was built in the 1700s or 1800s by a moderately prominent instrument maker. Recognizing that counterfeit instruments are common, a highly reliable appraisal is desired. But we've heard of appraisers who are not trustworthy, so leaving the violin with anybody is worrisome. One appraiser in the Seattle area wanted to keep the instrument for several days, saying that it takes several days to do it. The business has a well-known name, but my friend is still uneasy about leaving the instrument with anybody.

Can anybody recommend appraisers in the Seattle area? Are we being over-cautious?

Why not try your question on a violin related discussion board, I'm sure there must be one or a board that deals with appraisal of antique instruments. I'm sure there are some general guidlines for having items that are believed to be very valueable appraised.

All though it's hard to really believe any third party evaluations I think Hammond Ashley (sp?) is a well respected shop in you area. I think it's easier to blow smoke with a violin though cause so many kids play it as opposed to the bass

Would you mind posting some good pics of the Violin and also telling the name and date it says on the label? Maybe the trip is needed and maybe not.

There are tons more Violins with Italian labels in them than were ever produced in Italy by far.

Sometimes it is obvious what it's not which is more common that 'it might be a..' kind of thing.
