I've seen that done before. I would be afraid of some type of pressure (a wayward limb, for instance) finding it's way to the frog. Its positioning within the bridge would snap the bow like a twig.

No, that's way old-school. I've done it in my youth with a cheap stick (don't tell the bow police).

I noticed that Chuck Traeger's book has a photo of him doing it in like, 1955, as another example.

The bow can rattle, and/or fall down on the tip, too, so there's another thing to worry about (just what we bassists need).

I wouldn't do it with a bow that I care about, but that's me. I am older and balder now, and know of some sweet bows that have gotten damaged carelessly...

I'm sure I have a Mingus biography with a picture of a very young Mingus (1940s?) doing this. I've tried it, and Eric's right, it rattles!
