Lightbulb Instructor for Violin Making and Restoration

Just passing this along from my old school. Would be nice to see a bass friendly luthier teaching the "luthiers of tomorrow".

Instructor for Violin Making and Restoration

We are looking for an experienced luthier who would like to take a
leadership role in training by teaching full-time, five days per week. (A part-time
role in a team-teaching arrangement will be considered.)   We expect
that the most suitable candidate will be a graduate of a violin making school
and will have had substantial experience in established shops.  Prior
teaching experience is a plus.  In addition to in-class teaching
responsibility,  the instructor will evaluate student performance, order materials
and perform other administrative duties related to the classroom and shop, as
needed.  We encourage the instructor to participate in professional
activities.  An advisory panel of experienced violin makers provides guidance
and support for the instructor and the program.

In addition to annual salary, there are health and other benefits: a
pension plan, disability coverage, life insurance. Send letter of interest and
resume to Walter McDonald, Associate Director, North Bennet Street School, 39
North Bennet Street, Boston, MA  02113.

Preferred application deadline: May 15, 2004.
*****
The three-year Violin Making and Restoration curriculum at North Bennet
Street School is designed to teach fundamental tool-handling and visualization
skills to prepare graduates to enter established shops in repair or
apprenticeship roles.  The course consists of eight required instruments: 6
violins, a viola, and a cello.  All instruction occurs on the students'
projects, with opportunities for small group presentations and demonstrations. The
final two violins are prepared for presentation at a graduation examination.& nbsp; There are opportunities for students to begin their trade shop experience
while they are still in school in established shops in the Boston area.  We
have encouraged students to undertake repair and setup work during the time
they are in the course.  In addition, we have a program of visiting violin
makers to supplement instruction and broaden students' experience.

This class currently operates from 8:00 - 3:00, Monday through Friday,
September through June.  In addition to nine holidays, there is a two-week
break at end of December and a one-week break in April.  The projected
class size is 11-12 students, ages 18 and up, ranging in woodworking experience
from none to a moderate amount, high school diploma to college degree.
All students are expected to play a violin-family instrument or to take lessons
while in school.

North Bennet Street School has been training adults for over 110 years.& nbsp; In its early history, the training was for neighborhood residents.
In recent years, it has developed a national reputation in all its fields of
training: Bookbinding, Carpentry and Preservation Carpentry, Cabinet and
Furniture Making, Jewelry Making and Repair, Locksmithing, Piano Technology, and
Violin Making and Restoration.
