Jazz Bassists in the Big Easy

hey, ya'll. Just moved to New Orleans, and I'm just wondering who the big fish are out here. Who should I be trying to study with or just go and hear/meet? Thanks!

Yeah, Bill's a prize. We used to play together....(he played guitar).
Please say hi for me, Chad.
Thanks.

Last I heard Bill moved to Arkansas or something after the Hurricaine. James Singleton is bad-a$$. Also, check out Jesse Boyd, Dave Anderson's always down for a hang, and you can occasionally find Neal Caine lurking when he's not out with Harry. If none of those senior bad-asses tickle your fancy, the younger crowd has some good players too. Peter Harris, Dave Pulphous and Roland Guerin come to mind. Enjoy New Orleans! Get drunk on Frenchmen St. for me!

+1 on all the above, especially James Singleton and Roland Guerin.
And, for electric bass, few are funkier than George Porter, Jr. (Meters, PBS, Funky Meters, Scofield's new CD, etc.)

Chad:

I may be telling you something you already know, but ....

James Singleton is best known for his playing with Astral Project, although he leads a lot of his own bands, and often incorporates bowing, effects and (lately, his) trumpet playing in his performances.

Roland has been very busy lately, and he's done a lot of trio work -- Ellis Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Henry Butler -- as well as shows with Allen Toussaint, and his own groups.

And practically any bassist who plays with the great NOLA drummers Johnny Vidacovich (also Astral Project) or Stanton Moore (Galactic) is going to be worth seeing/hearing.

Snug Harbor, on Frenchman Street in the Fauborg Marigny, is a good place to go to hear some of the city's best jazz bassists. And Louisiana Music Factory in the Quarter has lots of recordings by NOLA musicians, and is something of a hang for musicians, with occasional in-stores, etc.

Online (and in print), Offbeat Mag is a reliable resource for local music. Gambit Weekly is useful, too.
