Joe Zawinul RIP

Just heard on the radio that he died yesterday at age 75. He sure did a lot with the time he had......

Ah, that's a shame, I heard he was hospitalized awhile ago, and then not much afterwards.

Ah geez... way too young. Mercy, mercy, mercy, indeed...

I listened to a lot of WR in the 70's, when I was a teenager and all that music was happening. Being honest, I just caught excitement and newness off of it back then -- Jaco and the other earlier bassists, Wayne, the drummers. I haven't listened to much WR in the last couple of decades. I did some solo driving out on the Prairie earlier this summer and I pulled out some old WR -- Black Market's about my favorite -- and I was struck by Joe and all the stuff he put in there, big things, little things, textures like crazy. You could really hear him, his sounds, his ideas. It's probably the best all of us could hope for.

This is a huge loss. Zawinul, imo, was and will continue to be the greatest influence on music, especially jazz, in the last half century and he goes down as one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time. I've never understood why he hasn't recieved more acclaim from the general public, because if anyone deserved it, he did.

Ah ****.

I don't like this week.

The Maestro, Zawinul...

I feel old. My heros are dying left and right.

I was out watching all of the Sam Jones that I could find on YouTube last month and loved this gem, for a number of reasons including the young innocent look of Joe Zawinul in the introductions. It's a good way to remember him.

RIP JZ

Thanks for the clip, Troy. With that haircut and that suit, I thought Joe looked younger 10 years later!

I love how carefully Cannonball gives a perfect German pronunciation of Joe's name -- who knows, maybe the cat even used an Austrian accent.

I Sing the Body electric;
The armies of those I love engirth me, and I engirth them;
They will not let me off till I go with them, respond to them,
And discorrupt them, and charge them full with the charge of the Soul.

Are you going to play the melody in harmonics ala Jaco?
