Oh ****. This IS a bad year, Joe Beck just died too.

My favorite Johnny Griffin story is from a performance at the Vanguard - Stanley Crouch is in the audience and is holding court with everybody at his table and at the surrounding tables. As the band is finishing the set Griff starts introducing the band and then says "I'd be remiss if I didn't introduce some of the notables in the audience this evening" and begins calling out the names of musicians and **** who are there. Finally he gets to Stanley " and of course we have one of the largest names in jazz criticism and writing , Stanley Crouch. Stanley Crouch ladies and gentlemen, Stanley stand up so everybody can get a look at you (which he does) yeah Stanley Crouch. Mother ****er loves jazz so much he couldn't keep his ****ing mouth shut all through the last ****ing set. ****ing jazz critic..."

I spent many a Friday or Saturday night at the Five Spot watching Griffin with Monk. Literally 6 feet from Griffin, 10 feet from Monk. Totally burning.

Check out wkcr 89.9 in fm in nyc (wkcr.org for non-ny'ers). Johnny Griffin memorial broadcast all day today (07/28). Monk at the 5 spot w/ Griff has continuously spun my head since first hearing it some years back.

Last.fm has a good array of Griffin choices for online listening. Been there all weekend.
