Larry Grenadier interview sparks thought

I stumbled across this interview with Larry Grenadier in which he mentions that musical humility and a sense of perspective of the sound of the band as a whole are integral in making a good bass player. He mentions that these human traits are often what draw people to the bass in the first place. Listen to the interview yourself as it's only a few minutes long but it got me wondering whether we bass players decided to play bass because of some innate character traits or if it was something different. Can you remember why you started playing bass? I'm interested to know because I can't really think why I started leaning towards the bass in the first place.
This is the interview
