Cool Luther Hughes is the man!

I was in Orange County in California this week for business. I was able to head up to Westminster to a restaurant to have dinner and listen to some live jazz.

The band was led by the vocalist Dewey Erney and in his band was bassist Luther Hughes and drummer Kendall Kay. After the first set, I chatted it up with Luther and commented I enjoyed his solos and how he incorporated the melody with his lines. He humbly answered that he was "looking for a good 1 or 2 notes".

His playing was terrific and I came away with some new ideas on walking lines and how to approach soloing.

We talked about his carved flatback bass that was made by his former bass teacher in Cincinnatti. It sounded terrific.

Listening to live jazz is the best!
