Jazz at Five Series
March, 12 2008
5pm-7:30pm
Overture Center Hall Main Lobby
201 State Street, Madison, Wisconsin 53703
Jazz at Five, now looking forward to its 15th season in 2008, has become a downtown Madison tradition. The series has consistently provided exceptional free concerts in a stunning locale - the 100 block of State Street, where State Street meets the Capitol Square. When the sun is shining, and the music is flowing, there is no better place to be than State Street. Think blue skies and the setting sun reflected onto the Capitol dome. In addition to the special setting, Jazz at Five features the best in local, regional and national jazz talent and is now one of the most important free, non-profit, cultural music series in Dane County. Our goal is to continue to broaden the cultural arts landscape in Madison. Jazz at Five will showcase Madison’s musical jazz diversity as well as regional and national acts to round out the series.

That seems like a nice venue for live jazz. I love Mad City! |

My wife did grad school a UW so we spent plenty of time having fun in Mad-town. She lived right by the capitol building. Incidentally so is the venue and the hotel they are putting us up at. It'll be fun getting back to the Great Dane or Cafe Montemarte. |

We're big, really, really big(think like 66 performers including oboes, flutes, french horns). I'm one of 4 bass players, so Its split time, but I think I'm the one with the most songs since I've actually study Jazz.
Also March 7, at the Masonic Temple on the corner of wisconsin and Johnson. All That Jazz Madison East Jazz event. 10 dollar tickets. I'm playing in both the Jazz Combo and the Big Band, the combo should be really good, but you'll only see that through the Dinner Buffet ticket.
One more Starting soon I will be playing sunday afternoons at Bab's French Quarter Kitchen as part of Jazz trios, and duos, there'll will be various line ups.

I'm playing as part of the Madison high school all-star jazz band. There is another bassist other than myself, and our organizer/instructor/experienced jazzman leader Hanah Jon Taylor insists that we both play all of the time. Hanah is based in Free Jazz so this could be a little interesting. Luckily though the other bassist and myself are probably the two best youth jazz bassists in the city, so we should be able to figure something out. |

I don't know how he's gonna get us to sound good in a week with two bassists we have one more rehearsal on wednesday where hopefully we'll meet our horn players. as of now its two basses and a piano.
Weather in Madison has taken a turn for the worse, by the way, by tomorrow their should be upwards of a foot of ice over all the streets. Everything's flooded right now and as soon as it gets cold its gonna freeze

btw Piane is pronounced like a snooty person say 'piano' but with a long 'e' instead of an 'o' on the end.

I'll make sure to come check you out when you play. |

We were the first act and didn't have much drawing power, but we played really well and since our drummer bailed on us Hanah talked Reggie Nicholson into playing with us. Which was so cool, the man is a god on drums. We didnt a couple old tunes like Scrapple from the Apple and In a Sentimental Mood(opening bowed solo was fun) and then played some originals. The sax player and I co-wrote one of them that turned out reallly cool. We also played a medium blues for fun and a little homage to mingus with a jam over the chords from Nostalgia in Time Square.
Overall the show was pretty awesome and was a whole lot of fun, especially considering we threw together out set in under 48 hours.
After we finished up we got to stay around and watch the other acts play, and they were all amazing, especially Archie Shepp and Hanah Jon Taylor. I even got to kind of meet and greet with a couple of the guys back stage. What a Night.
Does anyone know where I could post the recording of this. It is about 37 minutes long, but I'd like to share it with you guys.

If they are really into the gig the passion is contagious. I'm sure if you stick with the bass there are many more experiences like this one down the road.
If we can find a way to get me the file I can host it for you. Look into a free ftp service at www.yousendit.com.
Also I'd love to say hi to Hanah Jon. Do you have an email or something for him? PM me or email me off the board and we'll see if we can get that recording going for you. |

The Art Ensemble's records helped me keep my sanity Up North when I was growing up. | Let me ask around. I think he might just be 'retired' up there. He comes down to Chicago once and a while for Art Ensemble shows once and a while though with the depleted membership of that group it is a different thing... which is not bad. |
