Memphis Jazz Scene

Hey all,

I am considering doing some graduate jazz work at the University of Memphis, but I am a little uneasy about the scene there. Is there anyone with some insight on what's going down in Memphis besides Beale Street and Blues? Not that I don't dig blues or Beale Street -- I just want to know what the jazz scene is like (if there is one).

Try contacting Scott Reed. He taught at U of M a few years ago and is pretty involved in Memphis jazz.

I'm from Memphis, but I haven't lived there for a few years now. Here's some pros and cons that are just my opinion:

PROS: Last I knew, there's not that many bass players, cost of living is low, it's pretty easy to get around, there's a ton of great barbecue joints, there's a decent amount of good players on each instrument, there's some really incredible players from there that visit randomly. There's a few players in Memphis that are the coolest, most humble people I've met anywhere.

CONS: There's a general vibe of laziness and an acceptance of mediocrity that is like a dark cloud over the whole city I don't think the gigs pay that much either, although I could be wrong.

I don't know a whole lot about U of M, but I'm sure Tim Goodwin still teaches there and he's a good player. Feel free to PM me and I could probably answer some more specific questions.

I'm having the same problem. Let me know if you find any jam sessions or need any subs; I moved to Mississippi not far away from Memphis and have not been working at all after years of working 3+ nights a week in Oklahoma.

Scott said he has not been active in the scene in awhile and didn't have any ideas for me.

Tom, any pianists or horn players I should contact to try to get my foot in the door?

Thanks,

Monte

Monte, I'm pretty out of the loop, but here's some guy that I know still live and work there. These are pretty much all straight ahead jazz players too, if that's what you're looking for. Some drummers are Renardo Ward, Tom Lonardo, and Paul Taylor. I think Renardo plays at King's Palace on Beale St. He's a really good guy to know. I don't really know Tom or Paul very well, but they're both good players--Paul is also a killer electric bass player. Some pianists are Gene Rush, Chris Parker, Alvie Givhan, and Pat Fusco. Gene's getting older, but he probably still plays, and Pat does lots of hip hop producing, so he may not be around much either. Chris and Alvie are both great players and cool people. I think Alvie is at King's Palace also. Michael Jefry Stevens is another good pianist, and he puts together all kinds of gigs and concerts. Google him and find his website. There's alos a great guitarist named Joe Recivo(sp?).

I don't know many horn players. There's a sax player named Jack Cooper that hustles alot. There used to be a great trumpet player named Scott Thompson, but I don't know if he's still around. There's another trumpet player that's good--I forgot his name but he plays with his horn way off to the side of his mouth. Herman Green is a good tenor player, but I don't know if he still works. You should track him down just for the stories though

As for bass players, you should meet Tim Goodwin and Jonathan Wires if you haven't already. There's another guy named Errol Thomas. There's a guy named Bob Buckley that is a cool dude. Jason Ellis is a really good player, but I don't think he actually lives there, although I see him almost every time I go to Memphis.

That's about all the folks I can think of right now, but there's plenty of people I don't know. You should try to track down Renardo, Alvie, Chris Parker, and all the bass players first. Especially Jonathan Wires. Hope that helps. Tell Renardo hello for me if you run into him.

Wow, thanks Tom!! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. It is hard to break into a scene without at least knowing the names of some people.

Yeah, pretty much the straight ahead type these days. I really miss playing out though. My new house is considerably closer to Memphis than the one we are renting in Tupelo, so I was really wanting to get serious about looking around the Memphis scene after we move on the 15th.

I'll definitely tell everyone you said hi.

I don't know anything about the gig situation. I have a good friend who went to the U of Memphis. I was a very good program. He is a guitarist who had lessons with bassistTim Goodwin. He said he was one of the most amazing musicians and probably the best ear of any person he has ever met. He would bring in transcriptions and Tim would correct it in real time while he listens to the recording.

Thanks for all the information -- all very helpful. I would probably prefer a more out scene than what Memphis is, but I think it still sounds pretty cool. During my audition I had a good experience with Goodwin -- seems like hip guy and player . . . Jack Cooper is great too. Once again, thanks for the info -- it will help make my decision between Memphis and Northern Illinois. If anybody has more info . . . please keep it coming.

Peace.
