Anyone in the No. VT area? My trio, Ameranouche, is doing a Gypsy jazz workshop at Summit School in Montpelier. Electric and upright players are welcome. In fact, so are any other instrumentalists, or those curious about Gypsy jazz.
For the main part of the workshop, we'll break up into groups. The means you and I get to hang out and talk about bass stuff, semi-private lesson style. We can work from and toward wherever you are and address whatever you're interested in. Then we usually learn a tune, reunite, and play all together.
Gypsy jazz is more known for its virtuoso guitar stuff, so there are usually only a handful of bass players. Small groups rock.
Popular topics I've workshopped on in the past include....
- building walking bass lines (basic and advanced)
- fully improvised solos and walking solos in the Gypsy tradition
- basic slapping
- double and triple slapping etc
- dealing with long ballads
- marrying technique+speed
- technique for hand/wrist preservation
- ear training
- .... etc.
