Talking My first double bass recording - with a grammy winning producer!

Well, I'm psyched. I spent the last week at a studio in Dallas recording our big band - with Gordon Goodwin writing and producing! If that's not enough, it's my first double bass CD project (I started with the Big Girl about 2.5 years ago...).

Sound was taken from my bass (isolated in the vocal booth) by a Neumann M-147 placed near the end of the fingerboard, pointed halfway between the F hole and the fingerboard - roughly 5"-6" away. Also the output of my K&K BassMaster Pro was taken out of my Fishman bass blender (although, I don't think they'll use that signal - the mic sounded too good).

Honestly, guys - hearing the playback, it was difficult for me to believe I could sound like that! It just sounded too good to be me. Pitchwise, it was much better than I thought, though I did go back and fix some areas.

We did use a click (Gordon's insistance) - which is like sticking a knife into a trumpet player's chest, but we did manage to swing in spite of it.

Finished product should be done by August. Maybe someone here can host a few tracks for me? I know we won't press enough for everyone.....

Thanks for letting me share my week....

Hey congrats Pack 'em in! I'll host a couple of tracks for ya when it's ready. Just zip 'em up and email them to john@johnsprague.com . Perhaps The Talkbasses should be expanded to showcase some choice cuts from TB/DB.

Make sure you clearly state what they are in the email's subject, I get fidgety about attachments, the internet being the cespool that it is. And don't use words like "enlarge" or "viagra" in the subject, or my isp may filter/discard them.

Thanks, John! Would anyone be interested in an unmixed cut or two?

TETRIS:

Very cool! Goodwin is an amazing writer/arranger. I heard his Big Phat Band in Anaheim with clarinetist Eddie Daniels as special guest, and the charts and musicians were amazing (Gordon and Eddie were in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis band together).

Did he write the charts specially for this recording?

Can't wait to hear your Christopher. How did she perform?

Me, me, me too. And I swear on a stack of Miles records that I'll be sending out unmixed Harry Pickens trio cuts soon.
