What am I doing wrong? I can't get a half note pickup when working in 2/4. Anybody know what to do here?

Thanks,

A full-measure pickup in 2/4 time in Finale

After doing it this way for years (and just putting up with wrong-numbered measures, or hiding them and renumbering them myself using Text Tool),
I just tried something that worked the way the OP wants it to, I think. I have Finale SongWriter2010, and it will not allow me to directly select a full-measure pickup measure in 2/4 time, either. But this work-around trick worked for me in SongWriter2010--might work for you:

If you're making a new score:
(1) Launch the Document Set-up Wizard.
(2) When you get to the Score Settings window, select 4/4 Time Signature;
(3) THEN check the box in that same window that is labeled Specify Pickup Measure, and select the half-note (top left selection box).
(4) THEN go right back up and change the Time Signature to 2/4, and continue on.

If you already have a score in 2/4 time and you want to add a half-note pickup measure in front of it:
(1) Use the Time Signature tool to click on the first measure and change it to 4/4 time.
(2) Using the Selection Tool, highlight the first measure.
(3) Under Edit, select Insert Measure Stack and insert one measure.
(4) Insert your pickup half-note into that new first measure.
(5) Under Document, select PickUp Measure, then select a half-note (upper left box).
(6) Use the Time Signature tool again to click on the first measure and change it back to 2/4 time.

Using either of these procedures, the pickup measure will be measure zero. Measure one will be the first measure after the pickup measure.

I've learned, however, that what works in one year's version or subversion of Finale doesn't necessarily work in another. This worked for me in my copy of Finale SongWriter2010. Let us know if it works for you.

EDIT: C, I used your inquiry to start a thread in a Finale forum, and from the discussion therein it appears that there may be a way for you to do this directly with features in full Finale without having to use the above work-around trick that I have to use in Finale SongWriter. So, instead, you might want to check out the thread:

Hey Jack. I nominate you for Sainthood. That thread you posted above is hysterical (historical). From a mental health perspective you are a master of the tools of the trade. I say anytime a thread goes from the 7 1/8 note pick up of Clifford Brown's Jordu to the 7 1/8 note pick up of Haydn's Clock Symphony (number 101) you're in for fireworks. Not so in the Finale Forum. I guess the chops we learn at TB are good for somethin'.Thanks. C.C.

Hey, the plain truth is that I was in way over my head over there. Just about the time I decided that and beat a hasty retreat, along came a couple of experts to muddy the waters back my way a little bit. Whew! But I learned a lot anyway.

Just as an FYI:

You must be using one of the 'lite' versions of Finale like PrintMusic or Songwriter, because the full-blown version of Finale *will* allow a half-note pickup in 2/4.

I guess it's another case of downgrading the functionality of the lite versions to give users some incentive to upgrade.

Works fine in Finale 2006, really. What version are you using?

Ah....finally a thread that I can contribute to!

It is a weird bug that I agree should be fixed.

I'll give you the best "work-around":

Using the measure tool double click the 1st measure of the piece. Uncheck the box that says "Include in Measure Numbering". This will make the first measure of the piece--Measure Number zero.

Make sense?
