Needing Dough

Hey
I recently graduated and decided I needed to take the next step and purchase a higher quality instrument. Unfortunatly my money isn't flowing like many others. Currently I'm trying a bass from KC strings and they are offering me one month trial and 24 month no interest after i pay roughly half. Even though this is a great deal since many other shops dont offer this, I really dont want to just settle on a decent bass when I could get something better (within reasonable prices). What are some good ways to get money (besides saving, and asking the bank for a loan). Is there any special fund or grant you recomend? I looked at the NEA and they have some interesting things, but anything else?

The average liquor or convenience store holdup is only about a $200 take while bank robbery is average about $5000. And a bank is robbed every hour in America...but with all those cameras...conviction is high. Given the long prison times for crimes with force, you would be better working and saving than holding someone up.

But you knew that Jimmy, right?

So, am I the only one who wonders why Eric has this info at hand? Voice of experience? Or, too many Law & Order reruns.

Nah, google is an amazing thing.

Actually I thought of it as a few weeks back a woman came in to the shop to look at instruments for her son. She was a bank teller, and the bank she works had had just been robbed that day. I was the first non-bank person she had seen since the robbery...and she just kinda let go and blurted out her whole story.

Anyway, the guy made of with less than 2K and was caught within an hour. That's alot of time to serve for one moment of desperation. Even if you didn't get caught...I can't imagine living my whole life wondering if or when you would get caught...for such a small amount of $$.

I don't know anything about KC Strings but if they have a good finance deal do they offer it with higher quality instruments? That's something to check on. You can also take out a loan but interest rates suck.

Don't make the mistake of thinking you've gotta just gotta have an instrument you can't afford. Sell a couple of your EBGs and speaker cabs (what else ya got? Cars? Comic books? Sell 'em) and get yourself a decent and affordable plywood bass. Get a good setup. Then play the damn thing all day everyday. You'll get good and you'll get gigs and you'll eventually find that killer bass. I'm not there yet myself, but I've played hundreds of gigs with a Chrissie hybrid.

I'd second the "other damon's" advice but I would edit it to say get the cheapest carved bass that sounds decent you can or an EUB like the ergo.
You can get a carved chinese instrument for price you would pay for a plywood bass.

...yeah, "plywood" as such is not really what I meant. I suppose I meant something like "$3000 tops" or something like that. But like a lot of us, though, I've heard some killer-sounding plys that I'd be proud to play anywhere.

This is good advice. If you're looking to play jazz, go find a used Kay and invest in a new fingerboard. I couldn't ask for more from mine.

Indeed - if you are spending under $3000 you may well be better off buying a well-made ply bass than a not-so-well-made carved or hybrid. Still, $3000 is a great start for a bass - you should be able to find something well made and, equally important, well set-up for that kind of money.
