We'll miss him - good thing there are plenty of records, from all eras, to keep us company. |

I can remember seeing an interview with him once where he was being interviewed while sitting at his piano and noodling during the interview. He made this comment to the interviewer that I'll never forget...Oscar says to the guy
" I don't live here, (meaning Earth), I live Out There (looking up as if looking to Outer Space). And then he looks back at the piano and says "And this is my mode of transportation"...
R.I.P. Oscar... )-(

A lot of those listeners didn't stick around for much more, but he must have brought in a bunch more who did. That "Night Train" album is everywhere. I don't know how many times I borrowed that record (and "The Canadiana Suite") from the library when I was about 9 or 10 years old, but it was lots. I'm one of those listeners old Oscar managed to get to stick around for some more jazz. Almost 40 years later, I am a jazz musician (or, a musician who plays jazz -- I'm pretty sure there's a difference.)
Oscar affected my life. R.I.P., maestro. I hope you find the going a little easier in heaven.

In my opinion, he along with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen formed perhaps the most solid yet down to earth trio ever. I remembered reading once that despite him being a jazz virtuoso he always played for the people unlike several other musicians who played only to impress the musicians in the audience.
My trio loves playing songs that were done by him, always with that hint of 'peterson' blues in it. RIP Oscar, your music will be dearly missed along with the way you always sing your lines while you do your solos. |
